RAM NATH KOVIND’S BIOGRAPHY

Ram Nath Kovind was the 14th president of the Republic of India. Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1st October, 1945 in Parukh village in the Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. 



Early Life

He was born in a Dalit family. His father, Maikulal ran a small shop to support his family. He was a landless Dalit. Ram Nath was the youngest of all the five brothers and two sisters. He used to walk for 6Km to attend his junior school.

Education

His childhood was not an easy one. Although he holds a bachelor degree in commerce and has done LLB from DAV College (Kanpur University). He fought for Dalit rights in his early days. He is a very simple man and believes in living a simple life.

After graduating with an LLB degree from Kanpur University he went to Delhi to prepare for civil service examinations, although he cleared the exam in third attempt, but he did not join as he was selected for an allied service instead of IAS and thus he started practicing law.

Political Career

He held many significant positions in both Delhi high court and Supreme court. He practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for 16 years until 1993. He is a very generous and down to earth person as he as an advocate provided free legal aid to weaker sections of the society, women and poor under the free Legal Aid Society in New Delhi, He also served as a personal assistant to Prime Minister Morarji Desai from 1977-78.

He joined BJP in 1991. He contested from Ghatampur and Bhognipur assembly constituencies but lost both the times. He became a member of Rajya Sabha in 1994 as an MP from Uttar Pradesh state. He served a total of 12 years, two consecutive terms until March, 2006. He has represented India at the UN and addressed the United Nations General Assembly in October, 2002.

On 8th August, 2015 the President of India appointed Kovind as the new Governor of Bihar. He was praised for constituting a judicial commission to investigate irregularities in promotion of un-deserving teachers, mismanagement of funds and appointment of undeserving candidates in the university. He took all the possible steps he could to improve the condition of Bihar.

Personal Life

Kovind married Savita Kovind on 30th May, 1974. He has a son, Prashant Kumar and a daughter, Swati. He is a family man. 

His Aim

He is a man of high moral values who has always stood up for protecting the rights of the weaker sections of the society. His focus was on uplifting the state of the backward castes and poor people. After nomination for the post of 14th President of India, he resigned from his post of governor of Bihar, and Mr. Pranab Mukherjee accepted his resignation on 20th June,2017. 

Presidential Elections

He was nominated by the ruling party and won the 2017 Presidential Elections against Meira Kumar, the presidential candidate of the opposition. He won by a clear 65.65% votes against just 35.35% votes for Meira Kumar. We hope that our new President proves worthy of his salts and helps in the development of the country.
